What to Expect During Your First IV Therapy Appointment
If you’ve never had IV therapy before, you probably have a few questions: Will it hurt? What actually happens during the appointment? How long does it take? And perhaps most importantly, will I actually feel different afterward?
These are questions we hear all the time at Fluid Revival. After years of providing mobile IV therapy, we’ve learned that much of the anxiety surrounding a first appointment comes from simply not knowing what to expect.
The good news is that your first IV therapy appointment is generally a straightforward experience. From the initial booking to the moment your nurse leaves, our goal is to make the process as simple, comfortable, and personalized as possible while maintaining the appropriate medical safeguards.
Here’s what you can expect during your first IV therapy appointment.
Before Your First IV Therapy Appointment
At Fluid Revival, you can book an appointment online or contact our team by phone or text. Because we are a mobile IV therapy service, you don’t have to drive to a clinic or sit in a waiting room. In many cases, we can accommodate same-day appointments, with appointments sometimes available within as little as 1 to 1.5 hours.
Before your first appointment, there are a few important steps to complete.
If any of these components are missing, patients should think twice before proceeding with treatment.
Complete Your Intake Forms
First-time clients will need to complete an intake form and waiver. This gives our medical team important information about your health history, medications, allergies, and other factors that may affect whether IV therapy is appropriate for you.
Being honest and thorough here is important. Even if something seems unrelated to why you are getting an IV, let the medical team know about it.
Complete Your Telehealth Clearance Exam
First-time clients also complete a brief telehealth exam with a nurse practitioner. You may hear this referred to as a clearance exam or Good Faith Exam.
The purpose isn’t to make the process complicated. It’s an important part of making sure IV therapy is appropriate for you and that your treatment is provided safely and in accordance with medical requirements.
We have intentionally designed the process to be as streamlined as possible. You shouldn’t have to jump through unnecessary hoops to receive care, but there are important steps that shouldn’t be skipped simply for convenience.
What Happens When the Nurse Arrives?
Once your Fluid Revival nurse arrives, the appointment becomes very personalized.
Rather than simply showing up with a predetermined IV and immediately starting treatment, your nurse will talk with you about why you scheduled the appointment.
You may discuss things like:
- What symptoms you’re experiencing
- Why you’re interested in IV therapy
- Recent travel, exercise, or other activities that may have contributed to dehydration
- Your medical history
- Medications and supplements
- Allergies
- How you’re feeling that day
Your nurse will also take your vital signs and use the information gathered during the appointment to help determine which treatment is appropriate.
This conversation is an important part of the appointment. IV therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all, and the “best” IV isn’t necessarily the one with the longest ingredient list.
Does Getting an IV Hurt?
This is probably one of the two questions we hear most often from first-time clients.
“Is it going to hurt?”
The honest answer is that there is some discomfort associated with inserting an IV, because a needle has to enter the vein. But many first-time clients tell us afterward that the experience was significantly easier than they anticipated.
In fact, clients often tell us that the actual IV insertion was much less painful than they expected.
If you’re nervous about needles, tell your nurse.
If you’ve had a bad experience with an IV in the past, tell your nurse.
If you’re simply anxious about the process, tell your nurse.
There is no reason to be embarrassed about it. Knowing that you’re nervous allows your nurse to take extra time and make the experience as comfortable as possible.
What Does an IV Infusion Feel Like?
Once the IV is placed, the infusion begins. Most of our IV infusions take approximately 45 minutes.
You don’t have to sit there staring at the IV bag for 45 minutes, either.
Most clients use the time to relax, work, watch something on their phone, answer emails, read, or simply enjoy having someone else take care of them for a change.
Because Fluid Revival is mobile, you can receive your IV in a comfortable location that works for you rather than having to spend your time in a traditional medical office.
Your nurse will remain with you throughout the infusion and monitor you during the treatment.
If anything feels unusual or uncomfortable, let your nurse know. Communication is an important part of making the experience both safe and comfortable.
When Will I Feel Better?
The other question we hear constantly is:
“When will I feel better?”
The answer is that everyone responds differently. There isn’t a specific minute on the clock when you should expect to suddenly feel different.
That said, many of our clients report feeling better within approximately 35 to 45 minutes, often toward the end of their infusion.
What you notice will also depend on why you came in the first place.
Someone who is dehydrated may notice a meaningful difference in how they feel after receiving fluids and electrolytes. Someone coming in after travel, a workout, or another situation that contributed to dehydration may have a different experience.
And sometimes, you may not notice a dramatic change at all.
That’s an important part of having realistic expectations about IV therapy.
What Are You Actually Getting in an IV?
There is a lot of marketing around IV therapy, and it can sometimes make IVs sound like a cure-all.
That’s not how we look at them.
At its most basic level, IV therapy provides fluids, electrolytes, and vitamins or other nutrients depending on the treatment.
IV therapy can be a useful option for people experiencing symptoms associated with dehydration or certain nutritional needs. It can also be appealing for people preparing for activities or events where dehydration may be more likely, such as travel or exercise.
But an IV isn’t a magic solution for every symptom or health concern.
We think it’s important to be honest about that.
Why Fluid Revival Also Offers Functional Health
Our experience providing IV therapy has also shaped how we think about wellness more broadly.
Sometimes people come to us because they aren’t feeling their best, and an IV may help address some immediate needs. But if someone continually experiences fatigue, digestive issues, difficulty recovering, hormonal symptoms, or other ongoing concerns, simply treating the symptom isn’t necessarily enough.
That’s one of the reasons we expanded our practice to include functional health services.
Rather than simply asking, “What can we give you today?” we can also help look at the bigger picture and identify potential underlying factors that may be contributing to how you’re feeling.
IV therapy can be one piece of your wellness strategy. It shouldn’t necessarily be the entire strategy.
What Happens When the IV Is Finished?
Once the infusion is complete, your nurse will remove the IV and apply a bandage to the insertion site.
Your nurse will then complete your checkout.
At Fluid Revival, payment is taken after your IV is complete, so you aren’t worrying about completing payment before your treatment has even started.
From start to finish, you can generally expect the entire appointment to take about one hour.
The infusion itself is approximately 45 minutes, with the remaining time allowing for your consultation, IV placement, monitoring, removal, and checkout.
How Should You Prepare for Your First IV?
You don’t need to overthink it.
The most important thing you can do is be honest with your medical team.
Before your appointment, make sure you provide accurate information about:
- Your medical history
- Current medications
- Supplements
- Allergies
- Previous reactions to IVs or medications
- Any concerns or fears you have about the procedure
When the nurse arrives, find a comfortable spot where you can relax and enjoy the infusion.
That’s really it.
We take care of the rest.
What Your First IV Appointment Should Feel Like
If you’re nervous about your first IV, you’re not alone. Most of the questions we hear from first-time clients are completely understandable, and many people tell us afterward that the experience was easier than they expected.
You can expect a process that includes a pre-appointment health screening, a conversation with your nurse about why you’re seeking IV therapy, a review of your health history and allergies, vital signs, IV placement, approximately 45 minutes of monitored infusion, and a simple checkout afterward.
Most importantly, you should feel comfortable asking questions throughout the appointment.
Our goal isn’t simply to put an IV in your arm. It’s to understand why you’re there, make sure the treatment is appropriate, and provide a comfortable experience from beginning to end.
If you’ve been curious about IV therapy but haven’t tried it because you weren’t sure what to expect, hopefully your first appointment now feels a little less intimidating.
